Fuel System Control Module Diagnosis

AT THE BOTTOM OF THIS PAGE, YOU WILL FIND THE YOUTUBE VIDEO FOR THIS PROCEDURE. YOU WILL ALSO FIND THE PIN OUT DIAGRAM FOR THE FUEL SYSTEM CONTROL MODULE FOUND ON 2007 AND NEWER GM VEHICLES. PLEASE REFERENCE THE DIAGRAM TO HELP PROPERLY DIAGNOSE A FAULTY FUEL SYSTEM CONTROL MODULE.

BEFORE TESTING, ENSURE THAT BOTH FUEL RELATED FUSES HAVE BEEN REPLACED:
-FUSE (56) ECM 15AMP
-FUSE (21) FSCM 20AMP

STEPS TO DIAGNOSE:
1. CONNECT PIN1 (BLACK GROUND) TO PIN16 (PINK GROUND)
2. CONNECT PIN32 (RD/WH BATT + ) TO PIN47 (GY FUEL PUMP 12+)
THIS WILL POWER THE PUMP TO RUN AND CHECK FOR A FAULTY FUEL PUMP.
3. NEXT, CHECK FOR FUEL PUMP SIGNAL AT THE FUEL SYSTEM CONTROL MODULE.
4. FIND THE DARK GREEN/WHITE WIRE IN PIN13. WITH A TEST LIGHT CONNECTED TO THAT WIRE, TURN THE KEY TO THE RUN POSITION. IF THE POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE IS SENDING THE SIGNAL TO COMMAND THE FUEL PUMP ON, THEN THE TEST LIGHT WILL BE ILLUMINATED.

*IMPORTANT GREEN/WHITE WIRE CONDITIONS*

CHECK FOR ONE OF THE FOLLOWING THREE CONDITIONS.
1. CONSTANT 12V POWER
2. POWER ONLY WHEN CRANKING
3. POWER FOR 3 to 6 SECONDS WITH KEY ON. WIRE/PCM INTEGRITYPASS IF ANY OF THE THREE CONDITIONS HAVE BEEN SATISFIED.

AFTER COMPLETING THE STEPS ABOVE, IF YOU FIND NO POWER AT THE FUEL SYSTEM CONTROL MODULE, AT THE DARK GREEN/WHITE WIRE, MOVE TO THE POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE. AT THE POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE, CHECK PIN 50, IN THE BLACK CONNECTOR, FOR 12 VOLTS WITH THE KEY ON, FROM THE DARK GREEN/WHITE WIRE.

IF YOU FIND POWER AT THE POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE, LOCATE THE BREAK IN THE WIRE TO REPAIR. IF NO POWER IS FOUND AT THE POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE, REPLACE WITH PROGRAMMED UNIT.

Does a new FSCM need programming?

Yes. Most new GM Fuel System Control Modules (FSCMs) require programming with the correct calibration before they will operate properly. Simply installing a new module without programming can result in a no-start condition, diagnostic trouble codes, or improper fuel pump operation. If you're purchasing one of our Plug N Play FSCMs, the module arrives pre-programmed to your VIN and is ready to install.

Can you bypass the FSCM?

No—not as a permanent repair. The FSCM controls fuel pump speed using pulse-width modulation (PWM) based on engine demand. Bypassing the module removes this control strategy and may result in excessive fuel pressure, diagnostic trouble codes, poor drivability, or damage to the fuel system. While technicians may temporarily power the fuel pump directly for diagnostic testing, bypassing the FSCM is not recommended as a permanent solution.

Where is the FSCM located?

On most 2007–2009 GM trucks and SUVs, the Fuel System Control Module is mounted to the vehicle frame near the fuel tank. Exact location varies by model, but it is commonly found:

  • Along the driver's side frame rail
  • Just forward of the spare tire
  • Near the fuel tank and fuel pump wiring harness

Because it is exposed underneath the vehicle, the module is susceptible to water, road salt, and corrosion.

Can water damage the FSCM?

Yes. Water intrusion is one of the most common causes of FSCM failure.
Common causes include:

  • Road salt corrosion
  • Moisture trapped behind the module
  • Rusted mounting brackets
  • Corroded electrical connectors
  • Damaged wiring harnesses

Always inspect both the module and connector carefully before replacing components.

Will a bad FSCM set P069E?

Yes. One of the most common trouble codes associated with a failed FSCM is P069E – Fuel Pump Control Module Requested MIL Illumination. However, P069E does not automatically mean the FSCM is bad. The code simply indicates the module has detected a fault somewhere within the fuel system.

Other possible causes include:

  • Failed fuel pump
  • Wiring problems
  • Corroded connector terminals
  • Low battery voltage
  • Poor ground connections
  • Blown fuse
  • Failed FSCM

Proper diagnosis should always be performed before replacing the module.

Can I install a used FSCM?

Yes, in many cases. A used OEM FSCM can often be programmed and reused if it is compatible with your vehicle. We recommend using a new original GM module with the correct part number whenever possible. Installing the wrong hardware or calibration may result in communication faults or improper fuel pump operation.

What voltage should the fuel pump receive?

The Fuel System Control Module does not simply supply a constant 12 volts.

Instead, it controls pump speed using pulse-width modulation (PWM). Depending on operating conditions, the average output voltage may vary significantly while maintaining full battery voltage pulses.

During normal operation, you may observe:

  • Approximately 12–14 volts during fuel pump prime
  • Variable duty cycle while the engine is running
  • Increased pump output under heavy engine load
  • Reduced pump output at idle to minimize heat and electrical load
