About Us — Automotive Nerds With Tools We Probably Didn't Need… Until We Did

We Fix Automotive Problems the Normal Procedure Sometimes Doesn't

We're automotive nerds.

Not the matching-polo-shirt, clipboard kind.

We're the kind that somehow ended up with specialized programmers, bench tools, EEPROM equipment, J2534 interfaces, locksmith equipment, soldering stations, piles of wiring diagrams, and enough oddball automotive electronics knowledge to make normal dinner conversation difficult.

Our specialty is finding ways to solve automotive electronic problems when the normal answer has become:

"Replace it with a new one."

"The part is discontinued."

"A used module can't be programmed."

or our personal favorite:

"The dealer said it can't be done."

Sometimes it absolutely can't be done.

Other times somebody just needs the right equipment, the right information, and enough stubbornness to figure out another way.

That's where we come in.

We Do Things a Little Differently

Modern vehicles are basically computers with tires.

When one of those computers fails, the traditional repair process is usually:

Diagnose module → Buy new module → Program new module → Send customer on their way.

That's great when the new module exists.

The problem starts when it's discontinued, backordered, ridiculously expensive, locked to another vehicle, or the manufacturer never intended for a used one to be reused.

We work outside that normal replacement path.

Depending on the module and application, we may be able to:

  • Clone module data
  • Transfer EEPROM and flash memory
  • Virginize or reset certain modules
  • Unlock modules for aftermarket use
  • Recover data from failed hardware
  • Program replacement modules
  • Bench-program modules outside the vehicle
  • Make compatible used hardware usable again
  • Perform factory-style module programming
  • Solve problems where the normal replacement part is no longer available

Basically, we own a collection of specialized tools designed to talk to little black boxes that don't particularly want to be talked to.

And somehow, that became a business.

Bad Hardware Doesn't Always Mean Bad Data

A big part of what we do revolves around one simple concept:

The module may be dead, but the information inside it may still be perfectly good.

If we can recover the original vehicle data from failed hardware, we can often transfer that information into good replacement hardware.

That can preserve important vehicle-specific information while avoiding the headache of starting completely from scratch.

It's not magic.

It's electronics, specialized equipment, experience, and occasionally staring at a circuit board longer than any reasonable person should.

Yes, We Actually Diagnose Things Too

Owning expensive programming equipment does not automatically make every problem a programming problem.

We're big believers in proper diagnosis.

Before blaming an expensive module:

Check the powers.

Check the grounds.

Load-test the circuits.

Check the network.

Read the wiring diagram.

Prove what's actually broken.

We've seen far too many perfectly good modules replaced because somebody ran out of things to blame.

Our goal isn't to sell you the most expensive possible repair.

Our goal is to figure out what actually failed and determine the best way to fix it.

Sometimes that's programming.

Sometimes that's cloning.

Sometimes that's another module pulling down the CAN bus.

And sometimes it's a $12 fuse making a $500 computer look dead.

Cars are fun like that.

We're Automotive Locksmith Nerds Too

Electronic modules aren't our only bad habit.

We also have extensive automotive locksmith experience and equipment for:

  • Automotive key programming
  • Transponder keys
  • Remote-head keys
  • Proximity/smart keys
  • Key cutting
  • Immobilizer systems
  • All-keys-lost situations
  • Module and security-system related key problems

Understanding automotive locksmithing actually goes hand-in-hand with module programming.

Modern keys aren't just pieces of metal anymore. They're part of a security network involving immobilizers, BCMs, RF hubs, gateways, ignition modules, and other electronics.

Having experience on both sides of that equation has gotten us out of some pretty strange situations.

Mercedes Owners — We Need to Talk

We know automotive locksmithing.

We know Mercedes systems.

We also know when to leave well enough alone.

If you're calling about a 2015 or newer Mercedes because all the keys are lost and you'd like somebody to casually make you another one…

Take it to the Benz Spa. 😂

Let Mercedes pamper it.

Give it the full dealership experience.

Maybe they'll give it a cucumber-water bath while they're in there.

There are certain newer Mercedes security systems where the sensible answer is simply:

We're not getting involved in that relationship.

Older Mercedes/module work that falls within the services we offer? Absolutely.

Late-model all-keys-lost adventure where three computers need to agree that you are, in fact, allowed to own your own car?

Benz Spa.

We Work With Everyone From DIYers to Dealerships

Our customers aren't limited to one type of shop.

Over the years we've helped:

  • Vehicle owners
  • Independent repair shops
  • Locksmiths
  • Performance shops
  • Collision shops
  • Transmission shops
  • Automotive recyclers
  • Mobile technicians
  • Other programmers
  • Ford and other dealership technicians

Sometimes we're the first call.

Sometimes we're the tenth call after everybody else said no.

And sometimes a dealership technician calls us about the exact kind of used-module problem the dealership service counter just told somebody couldn't be done.

Automotive electronics has a sense of humor.

We Don't Know Everything — And We Won't Pretend We Do

There are thousands of module families across dozens of manufacturers.

Nobody supports everything.

We certainly don't.

Our equipment may support one version of a module and not another nearly identical version.

Some modules can be cloned.

Some can be reset.

Some can be unlocked.

Some are recoverable even when they're dead in the vehicle.

Some belong directly in the electronics recycling bin.

If we don't support something, we'll tell you.

We'd much rather say "we can't do that one" than accept your money and practice creative optimism with your vehicle.

Our Philosophy Is Pretty Simple

Prove what's broken.

Use the right tool.

Save the original data whenever possible.

Use good replacement hardware.

Don't replace six modules when one wire is broken.

And don't tell somebody something is impossible just because the factory scan tool doesn't have a button for it.

That's pretty much us.

Automotive nerds with specialized equipment, an unhealthy curiosity about how vehicle electronics work, and a tendency to find another route when the front door is locked.

If it's weird, electronic, discontinued, locked, corrupted, or somebody already told you "that can't be done"…

Now you've got our attention.
