Everything You Probably Never Wanted to Know About a Ford BCM

If you're here because someone told you that your Ford or Lincoln needs a Body Control Module, you've probably already discovered that BCM replacement isn't as simple as finding another black box with the same plugs and throwing it in the car.
That's where BCM cloning comes in.
We specialize in transferring the original vehicle data from a failed Ford or Lincoln BCM into compatible, known-good replacement hardware.
In simple terms:
Bad hardware + your original data = good replacement hardware with your vehicle's information.
This page explains how Ford BCM cloning works, why a used BCM can often be successfully reused, how to identify the correct BCM by its engineering number, what 14B476 and 15604 mean, why we require matching donor numbers, and why your Ford dealer may tell you a used BCM cannot be installed.
What Is Ford BCM Cloning?
BCM cloning is the process of reading the necessary vehicle-specific information directly from your original Body Control Module and transferring that information into a compatible replacement module.
Rather than installing an untouched used BCM containing information from another vehicle, we use specialized bench programming equipment to transfer the supported data from your original module into good replacement hardware.
Depending on the particular BCM family, that data may include:
- VIN-related information
- Vehicle configuration
- Factory option information
- Security/immobilizer-related data
- Learned information
- Module-specific memory
The exact information stored and transferred varies between Ford BCM generations.
The important part is the basic concept:
We preserve the original vehicle data while replacing the failed hardware.
Why Clone a Ford BCM?
Every used BCM already has a history.
It came from another vehicle and may contain that vehicle's VIN, configuration, security information, options, and other stored data.
Simply plugging that module into another vehicle doesn't make all of that information disappear.
Cloning allows us to start with compatible replacement hardware and transfer the necessary information from the vehicle's original BCM.
Instead of attempting to recreate everything from scratch:
We keep the original data and change the hardware underneath it.
This is particularly useful when the original BCM has suffered hardware failure but its memory remains readable.
What Does BCM Cloning Keep Intact?
The exact data varies by module family, but the purpose of cloning is to retain as much of the original vehicle-specific information as the supported cloning procedure allows.
Depending on application, this can include configuration, identification, security-related information, and other data stored within the BCM.
This is one of the major advantages of cloning over simply installing an untouched used BCM.
The replacement isn't beginning life believing it still belongs to the vehicle it came out of.
We're giving the replacement hardware the supported information from your original BCM.
"The Ford Dealer Told Me You Can't Use a Used BCM"
We hear this one a lot.
A Ford or Lincoln dealership may tell you that a used BCM cannot be installed or programmed.
That doesn't necessarily mean a compatible used BCM is technically incapable of being reused.
Dealerships generally follow Ford's factory repair procedures. Those procedures are typically designed around replacing a failed module with a new Ford replacement module and then performing the appropriate factory programming and configuration procedures.
There are also practical reasons dealerships don't want customer-supplied used electronics.
They don't know:
- Where the module came from
- Whether it actually works
- Whether it has hidden water damage
- Whether it is the correct hardware
- How long it will last
They also don't necessarily want to warranty a repair involving a used electronic module supplied by the customer.
And, of course, there's another practical consideration:
There's no parts sale or parts markup when you walk through the door holding your own $40 salvage-yard BCM.
So when a dealership says:
"You can't use a used BCM."
what they may really mean is:
"We don't install, program, or warranty used BCMs under our normal repair process."
That's not the same thing as saying BCM cloning cannot be done.
What If Ford No Longer Sells My BCM?
This is becoming increasingly important as Ford and Lincoln vehicles age.
Many electronic modules have been discontinued or are becoming difficult to obtain new.
When the correct new BCM is no longer available, a compatible used module may be the most practical replacement hardware available.
That's where cloning becomes especially valuable.
If we can recover the necessary data from the original BCM and transfer it into matching good hardware, we may be able to reuse a module that Ford's normal replacement process was never designed around.
How to Find Your Ford BCM Part Number
This is important.
We need the number from the BCM itself.
On many Ford and Lincoln BCMs, the identification information we need is printed on a large white sticker on the back of the module.
You may have to remove the BCM to see it.
Do not rely solely on:
- Ford dealer invoices
- Online parts catalogs
- eBay compatibility charts
- Salvage-yard interchange information
- A replacement module box
- Someone telling you "this one should work"
Flip the BCM over and photograph the large white sticker.
That's what we want to see.
Ford BCM Part Numbers β Look for 14B476 or 15604
Two Ford base numbers commonly associated with Body Control Modules are:
14B476
and
15604
A Ford engineering number may appear in a format similar to:
XXXX-14B476-XXX
or another Ford identification/service format containing:
15604
The complete number contains information identifying the particular module family and revision.
The middle number helps identify what you're looking at.
When you see 14B476 or 15604 associated with the module identification, you're in Ford BCM territory.
However:
DO NOT purchase a donor by matching only 14B476 or 15604.
Those are base numbers.
There are many different BCMs using those base numbers.
Match the COMPLETE BCM Number
For our standard cloning procedure:
The original and replacement BCM numbers must match.
If your original BCM says:
XXXX-14B476-ABC
we want the replacement hardware carrying the same complete identification number.
Do not assume a module is clone-compatible because:
- The plugs match
- The case looks identical
- It came from the same model
- It came from the same year
- A salvage yard says it interchanges
- eBay says it fits
- Ford superseded one number to another
Vehicle interchange and cloning compatibility are NOT the same thing.
Ford may be able to replace one engineering revision with another through its factory replacement/programming process.
We're doing something different.
We're directly transferring information between two pieces of electronic hardware.
For that reason, we require matching numbers unless we specifically approve something different.
Watch Out for Ford Replacement Numbers With a "Z"
Another common source of confusion is Ford service part numbers.
Ford replacement/service numbers may contain a Z within the first four characters.
Those numbers may be perfectly valid Ford replacement numbers, but they cannot be used to identify cloning support in our database.
We need the engineering/identification number from the actual BCM.
If you send us a Ford replacement number and we can't find it, don't panic.
Flip over the original BCM.
Find the big white sticker.
Take a clear picture.
That's the number we need.
Not Every Ford BCM Can Be Cloned
We clone a lot of Ford and Lincoln BCMs.
We cannot clone every BCM Ford has ever manufactured.
Our capabilities depend on the BCM family, processor, memory architecture, hardware generation, and the software/hardware packages supported by our programming equipment.
Some BCM families are fully supported.
Others are not.
This is why we verify the original BCM number before accepting the job.
Whenever possible, send us a clear picture of the white label on your original BCM before purchasing the donor.
We can determine whether that BCM family is supported by our current equipment.
It's much easier to check a picture than explain why the two BCMs you already bought aren't going to work.
Does My Original BCM Have to Work?
Not necessarily.
A BCM that doesn't communicate with the vehicle may still contain readable information.
Vehicle communication and direct bench access to the module's memory are not the same thing.
We may still be able to recover the required information from a BCM that appears dead when installed in the vehicle.
However:
We cannot clone data that cannot be recovered.
Severe corrosion, processor damage, memory failure, electrical damage, or other internal problems can make the original data unreadable.
Cloning always depends on our ability to recover the necessary information from the original module.
Water-Damaged Ford BCMs
Water damage is one of the most common confirmed Ford BCM failures we encounter.
A water-damaged BCM may have:
- Corroded circuit-board components
- Green or white corrosion
- Damaged terminals
- Communication failure
- Lighting problems
- Intermittent electrical problems
- No-start conditions
- Complete module failure
The interesting part is that the BCM's hardware can be damaged while portions of its memory remain readable.
That's an excellent situation for cloning.
Recover the data. Replace the damaged hardware.
But fix the water leak before installing the replacement.
Otherwise, you've created a very expensive water detector.
Before You Blame the BCM Because Your Ford Won't Startβ¦
Stop here.
A no-start, No Key Detected message, or no communication does NOT automatically mean the BCM is bad.

What You Need for Ford BCM Cloning
For most standard cloning jobs, we need:
Your Original BCM
This is the module containing your vehicle's original information.
A Matching Replacement BCM
This provides the replacement hardware.
Clearly mark the modules:
ORIGINAL
and
REPLACEMENT / DONOR
Before purchasing the donor, send us a clear photograph of the white identification sticker from your original module so we can verify support.
Ford BCM Cloning: The Simple Version
If you've made it this far, congratulations. You're already ahead of the guy who ordered a BCM based entirely on the fact that the plugs looked right.
The process is basically:
1. Diagnose the vehicle and prove the BCM is actually bad.
2. Send us the original BCM identification number.
3. We verify that the BCM family is supported.
4. Obtain a matching replacement BCM.
5. Send us both modules.
6. We recover the supported original data and transfer it into the replacement hardware.
7. Install the replacement and perform any required post-install procedures for the vehicle.
The goal isn't to reinvent your vehicle's configuration.
It's to put your original information into good hardware.
